This is a clip from a free concert put on by the Jamaican government to celebrate Labour Day, May 23, which is a National holiday. Not sure of the date of this concert but it was probably 1982 or 1983.
Barabara Jones was well loved Jamaican songstress, especially in the 1980s. She started out in the early 1970s and was by many considered to be “the leading lady of song”. In 1972 she made her debut with “Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)”.
Gospel singer Barbara Jones died at 3 a.m. today at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The 62-year-old artiste who is known for songs such as Gospel Bells, and Thank You, Lord, For Your Blessings died from acute leukemia. Her husband Hector Lewis told The Gleaner that his wife contracted the chikungunya virus (Chik-V) in September, just before she left for England to do some shows. “She had to cancel everything, the Chik-V worsened her condition and she was hospitalized for two weeks,” he said.
Jones returned to Jamaica at the end of September where she got the official news from her doctor that it was now acute leukemia. While undergoing chemotherapy he said his wife developed an infection which contributed to her death. She later gave her heart to Christ in 1991 and embraced gospel music. The singer died leaving her husband and three children.
