In the over thirty years since the emergence of dancehall as a genre, never have we seen so many females on its frontline. Evidenced on the 2015 lineup of Reggae Sumfest, this signals a significant shift in the balance of power in Jamaican Dancehall. All of six females on the festival’s dancehall night, names like Spice, Ishawna, Gaza Slim, J Capri, and Konfydence;
but before they became starlets of Dancehall there was one lady the male dominated space couldn’t help but respect. Today she is the queen of them all who is set to make even more history at this staging of the Reggae fest. She is billed as the first female artiste to close a night at the greatest Reggae show on earth, Lady Saw right now onstage.
