When Tommy Lee made his debut at Reggae Sumfest in 2012 as a solo act, he was the most anticipated on Dancehall night. He was the first ever Montegonian Dancehall breakout artiste to garner such a reception but a year later controversies surrounding his brand which carried the moniker “uncle demon” had a negative impact on Lee’s return to Reggae Sumfest but only as far as anticipation went for it was on that Dancehall night that Tommy Lee exhibited the kind of stage craft that placed him a cut above his generation affirming the “shook” DJ as a proper entertainer.
However legal woes including a charge for breaches under the anti lotteries act led to a banning of Lee from stage shows including Reggae Sumfest in 2015.
Since then Lee has only been making cameo appearances across the island but if the kind of responses he has been getting are anything to go by, the banning has done more good than harm, explosive forwards every time the demon touches a stage.
Tommy Lee is booked to make what is expected to be a triumphant return to Reggae Sumfest this July and is on our stage right now to tell us whether it’s a change in the fortunes of ‘uncle demon’.
