Candid Music Video Scenes#2: Ghost & Dejavu.

@LeoOReggio

An upfront and personal view of scenes from the making of a music video featuring Ghost and Dejavu. Loads of fun making music videos with my unorthodox approach to directing and producing. Again, it’s only me and Asha McPhail on the crew, how many producers can do that and end up with a quality product. With my creative and adaptable approach, I was able to produce videos on a regular basis, affordably, in the 80s and early 90s.
This video was shot in the world-famous Hellshire Hills and Beach. sad to say, the sea has claimed much of the beach at Hellshire, and as such people now go there mainly to eat the delicious fish, festival, and bammy served there. So enjoy what view you see of the beach in the video as it is not as nice now as seen in the video.

Carlton Hylton (born 1974), better known as Ghost, is a Jamaican singjay performer. He is best known for songs such as the dancehall hit “Body Guard”. He gained his first notice in 1993 singing for Clifton “Specialist” Dillon on ragga songs, partnering with DJ Culture as a rapper. Ghost was a member of Monster Shack Crew in 1996. He joined Jamaican singer Tony Curtis on 1997’s “Wine”, produced by Classical People for Opera House Production. In 1998 he wrote “What Have You Done” with Anthony Cameron, released as a single produced by Red Rose & Malvo during sessions for their compilation album How You Fi Sey Dat?
Hylton picked up the nickname “Ghost” as a child in Kingston, Jamaica, from the reaction of other children to his appearance in head bandages after being hit by a bicycle on the road.
In 2020, Ghost released the Christian worship song “Humbly Before Thee” under the Ghetto Youths International label.
He can be described as unique, sensational, soulful, dynamic, and sexy.
In 1977, at the tender age of 3, he was already performing on street corners for the people of Matches Lane, the Kingston community where he was born.
The more he sang, the more his respect and reputation grew. As a youth inspired by Michael Jackson and Bob Marley, he sang, sang, and sang perfecting his God-given talent.
In 1989, Ghost recorded his first tune alongside DJ Culture, “Commercial Time”, for producer Patrick Livingston.
Then came his first solo recording, “Killing Me Softly” for Patrick Roberts on the Punany riddim. From then the tunes began to flow fast and furious. In ’91 came the big hits for Shocking Vibes, “Do You Remember” and “Something Inside So Strong”. And then onto hits like “Here I Am” for Colin Fatta and “Oh Carol” for Digital B on the Stalag riddim.
Around this time was when he began to focus on the slow tunes that would take him to his highest heights yet in the music business.
In 1992, he was given the opportunity to tour with Legendary DJ Shabba Ranks, further securing his position as one of reggae music’s rising stars. Later that same year, he recorded “God Is Truly Amazing” with Beenie Man.
It was not long after this that Ghost began to work closely with Roundhead and General B, who would soon combine to create the formidable Monster Shack Crew. “We used to record up at Arrows studio”, he explained, “and when we finished we used to move together.
We would go up to a place Roundhead had up in Papine. It never build up yet, so we used to call it the shack. Roundhead did have a tune out at the time, “Man A Monster”, that’s where the Monster Shack came from”.
The Crew released an album in 1998 entitled Monster Party. Monster Shack has since renamed itself Monster Empire.

Dejavu rose to visibility in the early 2000s as one of the main artists working closely with Elephant Man, penning many hits for the Energy God including ‘ Jook Gyal ‘, Chiny Thing’, and ‘Pon Di River ‘. He spent most of the early part of that decade touring with Elephant Man, however, his career was never given to opportunity to properly flourish within that camp.
Elephant man never gave my recording career any real attention, it’s not about the money but I was constantly writing for him and helping his career and my career was placed on the back burner. I’m an artist first and a writer second. I just decided to do my thing on my own since I wasn’t getting real help from Elephant Man. There is no animosity there at all, I just decided to do me’ Dejavu explained
Dejavu’s recordings include ‘Nah Beg Nuttun’ which is extremely popular in Europe and received rotation here in Jamaica on popular radio stations. He has also released ‘Yo Gaba Gaba’ on the Instagram Riddim by Fedda Weight Productions out of Florida.
